The Emperor's New Groove (Cusco)
There are few things as pleasing to an eye as an Incan wall.
They didn't use mortar to place bricks. Instead, they shaped stones to fit
perfectly together, without space to fit even a blade between the cracks.
Incredible engineering and bordering on OCD, these walls stood the test of
time - earthquakes, wars and all.
Even when the Spanish conquistadores came along, they just built their
buildings on top of these foundations. Hence, most buildings in the city
have two distinct layers - the original foundation and the new build.
The same fate was not destined for the roofs, as straw and wood aren't
nearly as durable. While the wall engineers would have gotten into MIT,
the engineering talent responsible for the roofs undoubtedly had no prospects other than
Devry University.
Step outside the bustling city and the view changes to rolling hills and farming steppes.
